At the checkup appointment we review your medical history, check x-rays, then clean, floss and polish all teeth. Cleaning are done to remove any dental plaque and calculus that has built up on your teeth. Plaque is a soft, sticky, bacteria infested film that forms on teeth and the longer that plaque stays on the tooth surface, the harder and more attached to the tooth it becomes. The hard layer is called calculus. Cleaning and polishing of the teeth leaves the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria are unable to stick to them. Dental cleanings are a necessary step in preventing cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease which can result in tooth loss.
