GENERAL DENTISTRY
Family dentistry is for patients of all ages offering complete, comprehensive dental care.
At Family Dentistry of Upper Marlboro, we believe the best way to prevent tooth decay and maintain a healthy mouth is by regular brushing, flossing between the teeth and using a fluoride mouthwash. This will not only keep one's mouth clean but it will also prevent gum disease and other problems such as bad breath. In order for oral hygiene to be effective, it must be done twice a day: after breakfast and after dinner.
The most common types of dental disease are tooth decay, also called cavities, and gum diseases, of which there are two types gingivitis and periodontitis. Regular brushing can be done with a manual toothbrush, but electric toothbrushes are much more effective. However, brushing only cleans half of the teeth surfaces, cleaning in between the teeth using floss, interdental brushes or waterpik is just as important. During every hygiene appointment, we assess and review oral hygiene with patients and recommend the best way to maintain good oral hygiene for each patient. We recommend that teeth be cleaned professionally at least twice per year for most patients. Those that may have the presence of gum disease often need to get cleaning every three months.
